About UEM

The Eduardo Mondlane University (PortugueseUniversidade Eduardo Mondlane; UEM)is a national public institution, the oldest institution of higher education in Mozambique. It was founded on August 21, 1962, by Decree-Law no. 44530, under the name of General University Studies of Mozambique. In 1968, it rose to the rank of University, being then designated by the University of Lourenço Marques. On May 1, 1976, President Samora Moisés Machel gave this institution the name Eduardo Mondlane University, in honor of the important historical role played in Mozambique by Doctor Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane. It is also in his honor that the 20th of June, the date of his birth, is celebrated as Eduardo Mondlane University Day. 

The history of UEM, since its creation, reflects the periods of the country’s history, which influenced and determined the teaching, research and extension process, from the definition of professional profiles at the training level to the type of research to be carried out. considered as a priority. Today, Eduardo Mondlane University is part of a market economy social context and is present in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Zambézia, and, through distance learning, throughout the country and abroad and has about 40,000 students enrolled.
